Qld: Fire ants going down in battle
BRISBANE, Feb 11 AAP - Authorities in Brisbane appear to be winning the battle against fire ants.
Queensland Minister for Primary Industries Henry Palaszczuk said 377 of the 473 nestsunder watch at 43 sites in and around the city - or 80 per cent - were now inactive.
Mr Palaszczuk said corn-based baits were being used in the 36,500ha treatment zone, dispatched by foot, vehicles and helicopters.
"The results are a tribute to the job done by more than 500 people working on the fireant eradication campaign," he said.
A department call centre has taken more than 46,000 calls regarding fire ants.
Ant samples have been taken from more than 9,000 properties in the surveillance zone, with only eight returning positive fire ant results.
