Fed: Aussie soldier injured in E Timor machete attack

CANBERRA, April 29 AAP - An Australian soldier in East Timor was injured by a machete
when he and a friend were attacked by bandits earlier today.

An Australian Defence Force (ADF) spokesman said the two soldiers, part of the United
Nations peacekeeping force, were off duty at a beach west of Dili when three men tried
to rob them.

"There were three assailants and during the struggle one (of the soldiers) got cut
on the right hand, but the other showed his gun and the assailants ran off," the spokesman
said.

He said the soldier required surgery on his hand but was recovering in the UN hospital
in Dili in a stable condition.

His next of kin had been notified and the attempted robbery and assault was being investigated
by authorities.
