NSW: VMOS urged to sign indemnity contracts before collapse
SYDNEY, April 24 AAP - Visiting medical officers (VMOs) in NSW should immediately signtheir professional indemnity contracts with the state government, the Australian MedicalAssociation said today.
The warning by the NSW branch came in the face of a possible collapse of the nation'sbiggest medical indemnity provider, United Medical Protection (UMP).
NSW AMA president Dr Michael Ridley today said a collapse of UMP could leave doctorswhose indemnity contracts were not signed unable to practise in public hospitals.
Doctors who were previously covered by UMP but did not sign the contract would findthemselves unregistered in the event of a collapse and therefore unable to practise, DrRidley said in a statement.
"Because the state government has made holding medical indemnity a condition of registration, doctors who don't sign will be unable to practise if they are currently covered by UMPand the insurer collapses," he said.
On December 19 last year, the NSW government agreed to cover the medical indemnityof all VMOs providing services to public hospital patients.
The cut-off day was just six days away, the NSW AMA said.
