NSW: Pool cleaner sucked girl to pool floor
A domestic swimming pool became almost death trap for 12-year-old girl on a hot summer
day this February when she was sucked down to the bottom by an automatic cleaner.
The Pool Valet cleaner was so powerful that four adults struggled for minutes in vain
to prise the Sydney girl JULIE HADARIN free from the pool floor.
It was not until the pool's pump was turned off that JULIE was released from the suction
and resuscitated poolside.
The almost fatal incident has prompted the New South Wales government to launch an
investigation into the pool cleaner.
The NSW Fair Trading Department has referred the matter to the Product Safety Committee,
and Fair Trading Minister JOHN WATKINS has warned pool owners not to use the Pool Valet
or any similar cleaner when people are in the pool.
