Fed: Rudd priomised to abolish ABCC, unionists say

Union chiefs say KEVIN RUDD broke a promise made before the 2007 federal election to
abolish the Australian Building and Construction Commission.

Fairfax newspapers say Mr RUDD made the pledge in a secret meeting in April 2007 with
officials of the Communications .. Electrical and Plumbing Union.

The union claims to have given $500-thousand in cheques to Labor when Mr RUDD .. then
opposition leader .. promised to remove the commission.

Fairfax says Mr RUDD repeated the pledge in another secret meeting with officials from
the Construction .. Forestry .. Mining and Energy Union.

MR RUDD'S office hasn't responded to the allegations but Workplace Minister JULIA GILLARD'S
office says the government is committed to replacing the commission with a specialist
division of the inspectorate of Fair Work Australia.
