NSW: Son not guilty of murdering mother on mental health grounds

A son who punched his mother to death has been found not guilty of murdering her on
the grounds of mental illness.

In the New South Wales Supreme Court, Justice GREG JAMES said ANGELO SAMUEL FIORI was
suffering from a psychosis when he killed his mother.

FIORI, who was 22 at the time of the killing, pleaded not guilty to murdering his mother,
SERENA, at her Ashbury home in Sydney's west.

Justice JAMES has described the killing, on December 10, 1998, as an appalling tragedy.

He said medical evidence suggested that FIORI had suffered for some time from a psychosis
which led to the killing.

One report said FIORI had used marijuana and was on a cycle of steroids to build up
his self esteem.

Justice JAMES said FIORI didn't know what he was doing was wrong when he killed his
mother, and wasn't mentally responsible for the crime.

FIORI will be detained in the Long Bay prison hospital until the Mental Health Tribunal
recommends that he's no longer a danger to himself or the community.
