NSW:NSW govt backs clubs' pokies campaign
SYDNEY, April 11 AAP - NSW Tourism Minister George Souris has backed clubs in the campaign
against a federal government poker machine pre-commitment scheme, saying it will cost
jobs and lead to venue closures.
Clubs and hotels will on Monday launch a print, television and radio advertisement
campaign against a proposed mandatory pre-commitment scheme, which independent MPs are
lobbying the federal government for.
Independent MP Andrew Wilkie has threatened to withdraw his support for Prime Minister
Julia Gillard's government if a mandatory system isn't in place by 2014.
Mr Souris said the scheme would slash poker machine revenues in NSW, sacrificing jobs
and the viability of some clubs.
The NSW government supported a model of voluntary pre-commitment, not a mandatory system,
he said.
"To stay in power, Julia Gillard is prepared to sacrifice thousands of jobs, many food
and entertainment outlets including for seniors, support for sport and community organisations
in every part of NSW," Mr Souris said in a statement.
Mr Souris said a mandatory pre-commitment system would just drive punters underground
or online, and not fix problem gambling.
"It (is) in the interests of all concerned to ensure gambling remained regulated and
if possible in licensed venues rather than either underground or on the internet, where
it is certain the incidence of under-age and problem gambling would increase," Mr Souris
said.

FED:Homelessness falls off Gillard radar
There are concerns homelessness has fallen off the Gillard government's radar .. with
welfare groups questioning its commitment to the cause.
Labor .. under previous prime minister KEVIN RUDD .. outlined an ambitious 800 million
dollar plan to halve the number of homeless Australians by 2020.
The peak body working to prevent homelessness says rates have been on the rise .. and
the government is not on track to meet its target.
Homelessness Australia CEO NICOLE LAWDER says it was certainly a priority for Mr RUDD
.. but we're yet to see that focus from the Gillard government.
A government briefing shows just 23 hundred .. of the 50 thousand new homes promised
by 2014 .. had been built by September 2010.

The Royal Automobile Association says Friday is now the best day to get cheap petrol
in South Australia.
Senior policy analyst CHRIS WEST says there's been a dramatic shift in the price cycle
over the past 10 weeks .. from Wednesday to later in the week.
He says the shift has occurred as competition by fuel retailers for customers has intensified.
But Mr WEST says while Friday is the best day now .. the situation is far from stable.

FED: Google gets down and detailed on the street where you live
EDS: Strictly embargoed until 0001, Tuesday, Aug 5
By Vincent Morello
SYDNEY, Aug 5 AAP - Close-up images of Australian homes, businesses and famous landmarks
in cities, towns and remote areas are now available on Google Maps Australia, absolutely
free.
Street View, the newest addition to the popular website, contains more than 10 million
images that users can search and view.
Australia is only the third country to benefit from the technology, which was a useful
tool during last month's Tour de France and is also available in 50 US cities.
From 3am (AEST) today, anyone can access the tool by simply clicking on a button to
find the 360-degree, street-level images.
The hard yards of getting Street View off the ground involved a group of "Google" cars
mounted with rooftop digital cameras.
The vehicles criss-crossed Australia, snapping endless photographs for about six months.
Street View integrates with other Google Maps services - driving directions, searching
and mapping specific businesses in a neighbourhood and the highly popular satellite views
on Google Earth.
It can give drivers images of intersections to go with their driving directions and
enable prospective homebuyers to view the streets surrounding a property for sale.
Cafe and restaurant goers can determine if a venue they have in mind has al fresco dining.
Business owners can take things further and download free images of their properties
and other information, for use on their own websites.
Google Maps creator Lars Rasmussen says Street View has many applications for business,
government and for rescue services when natural disasters strike.
"Our ambition is, of course, to be a world map - we're almost halfway there," Mr Rasmussen
told reporters at Google's offices in Sydney.
"With Street View, it adds a whole new dimension."
Tourism Australia, the Real Estate Institute of Australia and the Australian Geography
Teachers Association have all praised the new technology.
Google has also built in a feedback mechanism for property owners to request the removal
of photographs that identify people or sensitive information.
Street View already blurs people's faces and vehicle registration numbers.
One couple in the US filed a lawsuit earlier this year after realising a photograph
of their Pennsylvania home had been taken from a private road.
The image was later removed and Google says not many complaints have been received
since Street View went live in the US.
The company says additional images of Australia will continue to be added, but it cannot
say how often existing images will be updated.
Street View can be accessed from 3am (AEST) today by visiting maps.google.com.au/streetview.

NSW: Abbott says Labor plan is a case "of fools rushing in" =2

NSW: Abbott says Labor plan is a case "of fools rushing in" =2
Mr Abbott said Mr Rudd had lambasted the government for taking over funding of Tasmania's
Mersey Hospital with a $45 million agreement that enabled the hospital to retain its frontline
services.
"Last week Mr Rudd said that taking over just one public hospital was an absolutely
rotten way to run a federation," he said.
"Now he wants to take over 750 hospitals which I think shows that he just doesn't really
know what he's talking about."
Under Labor's plan, a National Health and Hospitals Reform Commission would be established
by early next year, with $2 billion to invest in the health system over four years.
States and territories would be asked to sign up to achieve better health outcomes
and if they meet their targets would receive financial bonuses.
If they do not agree by mid-2009 they would lose financial control of their public
hospitals following a referendum to gauge public opinion.
Mr Abbott said the proposed reform commission was a move to dodge responsibility for
offering voters a pre-election solution to Australia's public health care problems.
"He's saying 'elect me then I'll establish a commission that will make recommendations
then I'll decide what I'm really going to to do'," Mr Abbott said.
"It's a trust-me policy and I don't think the public will be inclined to trust Mr Rudd on this."

SA: Rann calls for extra water for SA

SA: Rann calls for extra water for SA
ADELAIDE, April 9 AAP - South Australian Premier Mike Rann has called on the federal
government to allocate an extra 200 gigalitres of upstream River Murray water to the state.
Mr Rann has asked for the extra environmental flows as part of the agreement under
which the federal government will take charge of the river system.
The premier said that while in-principle agreement had been reached to hand over the
state's powers on the Murray to the commonwealth, there were still details to be sorted
out, including flow allocations.
But, he said, he was confident the deal could be finalised within the next few months.
"I'm confident that we are going to get a good outcome out of this," Mr Rann told the ABC.
"I think that everyone wants to see it work and the letter I wrote to the prime minister
was about ironing out some of the details so we can sign off on it formally," he said.
Mr Rann said he believed Australia now had a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reconfigure
allocations so that in times of extremely low flows Adelaide and other urban centres could
have adequate water supplies.
But Foreign Minister and the federal member for the South Australian seat of Mayo,
Alexander Downer, said the problem of increasing flows to South Australia was a lack of
water in the Murray system.
"The more environmental flows we can get into South Australia the better, we all believe
that," Mr Downer said.
"The problem with the River Murray at the moment is a lack of water, full stop.
"The water is not coming from the heavens in sufficient quantities."
Mr Downer said he hoped a combination of the federal government taking over the running
of the Murray-Darling system and more rainfall in the catchment areas would permit greater
flows to South Australia.
"At the moment, the problem has just simply been a lack of rainfall in the catchment
areas," he said.
"So when we're talking about extra allocations, we can't even fulfil our current allocation
because of such a shortage of water."
